ICL

Time to begin the second year so lets start with what the second year is about...COURSEWORK!

This is a mass spectrometer. They are very expensive and delicate machines. Here, the sample is beimg measured.

And as with all high-precision machinery, it must be cleaned with dirty kitchen towel. And they wonder why their results are crap on the screen ;)

This is an armfield control panel for the distilation experiment. This was for Neil, Rodge and Imran's coursework. Patrick got to play with spoodge balls instead. OK, they're yeast balls really, but they're quite spoodgy nonetheless.

More on the distilation tower schematics and Niel is taking samples with some strange yellow probe.

OK, the distilation thing isn't as impressive now you can see it. Rodge seems impressed with his recently-marked computing coursework. Mind you there has been some tension in their group over this but I guess it turned out OK. ;)

A cool gas analyser machine with some results. Rhys and his lab partner were working on this thing.

Here is the computer which controls the whole thing. It is so sweet, I wonder where Apple got their inspiration from?

A closeup of the compw00tzpr and the apparatus I used in labs, a vacuum-pumped boiling thing for acetone solution.

Here is Neil, winning a competition for some opera tickets. Apparently the performance wasn't that bad. Perhaps more of us should put our names in for a chance? The other pic is the telescopic scale, used to measure the height of the manometer in the photo above this one.

Here is the boiling acetone and the thermometer, whos readings were only available to be seen in this small glass window! We were told we were boiling acetone, but as for the green stuff, that's anyone's guess.

Finally, a nice signal generator and a volt meter I salvaged from the junk heap. Not bad going, although the volt meter is quite big and heavy for what it is! I could sell it if someone wanted it, but it can be a bit dodgy sometimes. It might need recalibrating.
