And in case you were wondering, Joss and Summer revealed the truth about the mysterious River Tam promos that have been appearing on the internet recently (watch the latest here) at the post-screening Q&A last night. Apparently, more and more of these shorts will be appearing up until the film is released and together will end up forming a little story of their own (plus yes that is Joss in the chair).

Of course, the topic was handled rather differently and amusingly on today's Empire webcast. Read on:

Trienco: The River session videos. How official are they, as Universal still denies knowledge. Are they just playing along or is it handled by someone else?

Summer: Trienco, I don't know...

Joss: Trienco, I also deny knowledge of those things that I wrote and shot and am in.

SimonWho: Summer, was it fun stabbing Joss in the throat with a pen?

Summer: Always a good laugh!

Joss: beingrad, dance of joy was fun, though I hope never to be asked to do it again. But at the end of the day, what's more fun than being stabbed in the throat with a pen by Summer? About which I know nothing, and deny any involvement.

The webcast then ended with Joss saying this:

"I'm leaving now, I've never been so insulted and besides the Empire office smells of soup. I don't think this interweb thing will ever catch on." (LOL!)

P.S. As of now. The Black Diesel Cinema Forum is open for business.

19/08/05

This rather neat piece of footage, which is uncommonly known as viral marketing (essentially, promotional material is leaked by filmmakers/bands online to sneakily help hype up their latest project), popped up on several movie sites earlier this week, with no explanation whatsoever. What I can tell you is that the video is related to an upcoming film that I will be seeing next week. The film in question being Joss Whedon's Firefly movie "Serenity" (due out in the UK on October 7th) and the actress in the trailer is Summer Glau (aka troubled teenager River Tam). What this clip actually means in the context of the movie as a whole is anyone's guess (I already have my theory) but this creepy slice of marketing macabre is certainly one of the most effective film promos that I've ever come across. You can view the disturbing footage by clicking on the cast photo below. Meanwhile, you can check out the fantastic "Serenity" trailer on the film's website. My review of the film will be up next Thursday.

UPDATED: Fun Lovin' Criminals

I've been pretty pushed for time recently so unfortunately this is just a small update before I go away for a couple of weeks.

I've added write-ups of "League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse", "Mr & Mrs Smith", "Batman Begins", "War of the Worlds" & "The Descent" to the Movie Reviews section.

Plus the two Just Chillin' mixes I made will remain available for download until the end of the month.

When I'm back, I'm gonna try and organise a Bankrupt Radio reunion show for August.

See you in two weeks!

Well its up a lot quicker than even I expected but you can now download "Just Chillin' The Mix Part Two" here (OFFLINE). At 74 minutes long and 68 megs in size, its a slightly chunkier (and bandwith eating) proposition, but well worth it if you want my honest opinion (not that it counts for much). Check out the tracklisting here. I'll be back later in the week with a much larger update.

New mix time again! Download part one of "Just Chillin The Mix" here (OFFLINE). 55 minutes long and 50 megs in size. Part two will be up by the end of next week. Click here for a full tracklisting and enjoy. Cheers.

NEW PAGE: The David Lynch Mix

UPDATED: Downloads Scripts

I'm currently frantically piecing together my latest feature-length opus, a fast-paced film noir fantasy thrillride entitled "The Day That Never Was" (I'm on page 50 at the mo) and seeing as the full script won't be finished for some time, I've just put up the opening scene (which I'm pretty pleased with - and don't worry, it will all make sense by the end - I promise) on the Scripts page. You can read it here.

I'm also pleased to announce my latest musical effort, I'm Deranged: The David Lynch Mix which is also my first foray into the world of movie score mixing. I'm a huge fan of Lynch's work and one of the main reasons why his films work so well is their atmospheric musical soundscapes (imagine what "Twin Peaks" would have been like without Angelo Badalamenti's brilliant music). Click here (OFFLINE) to download my favourite mix to date and for more info about the director, check out his bio on the first page of my A to Z of Cool. And in case you were wondering, yes I am inflicting the same only up for a couple of weeks curse that I seem to present you with everytime I feel the need to mix other people's music together. Incidentally, the mix is almost an hour long and 53 megs in size so download it at your peril.

And finally, my full review won't be up till next weekend but if you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you go and see Star Wars Episode Three. It doesn't disappoint.

UPDATED: Movie Reviews Scripts

REVIEW OVERLOAD PART 3 - Constantine, Kung Fu Hustle, Cursed, Ong-Bak, Seed of Chucky,

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, xXx 2: The New Level, A Dirty Shame, Reefer Madness

Click here to visit Movie Reviews and check out two more exclusives, including the first ever UK review of "Reefer Madness" - click the poster above to visit the official site.

I've just put up On The Rocks the script I wrote for my second year screenwriting piece. You can now read it in the Scripts section.

Let me now draw your attention to what is fast becoming an obsession of mine, the US tv series "Veronica Mars."

I don't wanna hype it up too much for you but I can't quite remember ever being this excited about one television show. In simple terms, the show mixes the style of "Alias", with the teen element of "The OC", with the mystery of "Twin Peaks", with the witty dialogue of "Buffy", with the detective element of Raymond Chandler's "Philip Marlowe". In simpler terms, the show is utterly utterly brilliant.

Along with quite possibly the most likeable lead character (wonderfully played by the luscious Kristen Bell) in recent tv history, the show's success is further accentuated by a gripping central narrative, an amazing soundtrack and a cracking supporting cast. Enrico Colantoni is the dad everyone would like to have (he's so warm and cuddly), while Jason Dohring's Logan Echolls starts off as the token teen bully character and develops into probably the most sympathetic character on the entire show (thats good writing for you - CSI take note). Plus Alyson Hannigan pops up later in series as Logan's sister.

Unfortunately, UK viewers will have to wait a while to see this one on tv (BitTorrent - hint hint) cos it has yet to be picked up by a British channel. However, Season One is due out on Region 1 dvd in September. If I had to recommend one thing for you to see all year, this would be it. Yes, its that good.

Click on the picture below to visit the official site.

  • Here are some more critical soundbites, courtesy of http://www.trektoday.com/
  • Variety (via Yahoo! ) called the show "the smartest teen-oriented drama since Freaks and Geeks ", praising the private investigator format as a means to explore the insecurity of its 17-year-old protagonist, played by Kristen Bell. The daughter of a former sheriff, Veronica helps out in her father's investigative firm and crosses boundaries not meant for someone as young as she is. " Veronica Mars has the potential to draw in The OC crowd," notes reviewer Phil Gallo , who said it might make sense for this Viacom series to switch from UPN to CBS to find a broader audience.
  • "The show's characters and mysteries are not unraveled quickly. More remains unsolved than solved at the end of tonight's premiere," wrote The New York Daily News reporter David Bianculli , who also enjoyed seeing Bell's return to television from Deadwood : "Bell's acting, very real and often very raw, is this show's not-so-secret weapon." He also liked her interaction with Enrico Colantoni , playing her father.
  • The Hollywood Reporter noted that the premiere was so cleverly constructed that reviewer Barry Garron wondered whether it could sustain the same enjoyable characters and clever dialogue for a season, but noted that if "future episodes are half as good, this still will be one of TV's bright spots." The title character, he said, "has all the sass, strength, resolve and ingenuity of any of literature's classic detectives...embodied in a high school student who daily faces the challenges of peer pressure, social hazing, romantic dreams and the rigors of academics."
  • "Teen drama helps UPN grow up," blared the St. Louis Post-Dispatch , which called Veronica Mars "a quirky mix of light and dark, humor and grit, sentiment and substance - The O.C. if scripted by Raymond Chandler." Gail Pennington also praised star Bell and the witty teen dialogue.
  • The Detroit Free Press compared the titular heroine to Nancy Drew, saying that the new series has a "sassily intelligent pop noir spin." Bell, whom reviewer Mike Duffy called "a knockout" as Veronica, "brings a playful comic intelligence and emotional energy to her portrayal of a high school outsider with a whole lotta moxie." He also found the series to be refreshingly original.

NEWS FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL

    22/04/05

    UPDATED: Downloads

You can now download a groovy Limited Edition Living the Nightmare Pre-Release Mix (try saying that ten times fast) from OFFLINE and don't worry, this one's only 25 megs in size. The mix is compiled of score music that I've written for the film, other songs you can expect to hear on the soundtrack plus a healthy slice of inspirational cool. It'll only be up for a short while cos its only a teaser for the real thing, so download it while you can (plus how many of you actually managed to find this month's extra-cheeky hidden freebie? I'm guessing not many). You can expect three more full-length efforts later in the year: "I'm Deranged: The David Lynch Mix" (May), "Just Chillin The Mix" (July) and "Living the Lie: Music From The Movies" (September). And there should be a full update at the back end of next week (after I've handed in my essays).

    BIRTHDAY MESSAGE - 2005

UPDATED: Downloads The Perfect Lie Fun Lovin' Criminals The A to Z of Cool

It's that time of year again. I'm 20 years old today so I thought I'd give you all a present. But unlike last year, that "present" doesn't involve an overlong ramble about the forth-and-upcoming works of Black Diesel Incorporated (see bottom of the page). Instead, I thought I might just show you one of the films we've done. That film being last year's film noir The Perfect Lie directed by Simon Boyles. For over a year now, I've made promise after promise that the film would "soon" be available for download. This was all just a big fat "lie." That is until now.

As a spare of the moment thing, I contacted James on Tuesday about possibly uploading the film onto the site. 24 hours later and we had not only uploaded the film but also recorded a commentary (with a video intro), changed (i.e. improved) the music over the end credits and smoothed over a few of the cracks in between. And that's how it happened.

James is currently working on the final high quality transfer of the film as we speak, so that he can put up a choice of three different quality sizes of movie. These should be up within the next day or so. You lucky lucky people.

Right now, you can download a less smooth (but still fairly chunky) 120MB version of the film + the film with commentary by me (148MB) from here. If you're looking for the real deal though, the final version should be up very soon. It will be worth the wait.

And while you're at it, there are now a humongous 49 new additions to The A to Z of Cool - "off the record, on the qt and very...hush...hush."

If you haven't already, click the picture above to visit The Unofficial Karmic-Chi Love Thing and download some world-exclusive Fun Lovin' Criminals material.

And finally, unless you've been on Planet Bizarro for the last month you'll probably have already heard about Frank Miller's Sin City which blew apart the US Box Office at the weekend with an estimated $29.1 million and has received much critical acclaim from reviewers in the States.

It looks like it could well be the best film of the year so I've provided you with a few Sin City media tidbits.

You can currently download both ultra cool trailers from:

    http://www.jurassicpunk.com/movies/sincity.shtml

There's a fairly in-depth review of the Sin City soundtrack here:

Check out a wicked cool comic-to-film comparison here:

There are some pretty cool clips and interviews up at IFILM:

While Yahoo Movies has a pretty neat 11 minute doc on "Bringing The Graphic Novel To Life":

    http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hv&cf=trailer&id=1808560210

The film is due out in the UK on June 3rd and you can download a cool wallpaper I made from here.

It will be worth the wait.

"Walk down the right back alley in Sin City... and you can find anything."

    Take care,

Andrew "Loyale" Watson (8th April 2005)

NEWS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH

    06/03/05

A hapless wanna be gangster, Sing, must overcome his inability to wield a knife and demonstrate his mettle in order to become a member of the notorious Axe Gang. The Axe Gang, meanwhile, want to reign supreme by occupying the most coveted territory, which is a sacred street protected by an unlikely cast of characters, many of whom are highly skilled kung fu masters disguised as ordinary people. After several encounters with thugs and a fearsome adversary known as the Beast, Sing overcomes his inadequacy and realizes he is the greatest kung fu master of them all, destined to protect the sacred street.

Let me now draw your attention to the brilliant new film from Stephen Chow, the man behind last year's "Shaolin Soccer" (out on Region 2 dvd on March 14th). This follow-up looks just as good, if not better and is due out here on June 3rd (incidentally the same day "Sin City" is now scheduled to arrive.) NEWS FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY

    26/02/05

    NEW PAGE: Scripts

    UPDATED: Stalkers Anonymous

As I warned you, last week's little surprise has now been taken down. For those of you weren't lucky enough to (find it and) download it, last week's hidden treasure was the Sin City Comic-Con footage (7 minutes of sheer bliss) that drove fanboys crazy last summer (comprising of the opening scene of the movie, comic comparisons and unfinished effects shots). Very cool indeed. If you're good (and providing I don't get an e-mail from Miramax), I'll probably put the footage up again just before the film is released (April 22nd in the UK).

This week, I've put up a new Scripts page so you check out some of the crazy things I've written over the last five years and the new improved Stalkers Anonymous site is also now active here.

    UPDATED: Main Page Movie Reviews

Hi everyone. I spoke to James recently and it seems that there should be no problem in having The Perfect Lie up for download by April. Don't hold your breath for the dvd though (you could probably make your own quicker than its taken us to get round to doing it). I'm also going to try and get some of the mixes I've done up for download via BitTorrent, which seems to solve the bandwith problem.

Jack and I started shooting our latest short, an art film entitled "The Journey" on Thursday, which should be in the can by late March. While, "The Day That Never Was" has been put on the back-burner until April (currently coming in at a healthy 50 pages) to make way for my latest short script, the screwball comedy "On The Rocks." I've finished writing the first draft and again, the final version will (have to) be finished by the end of next month. If you wanna read it, just give me a bell.

In case you haven't heard, we started filming The Night of the Squirrel in December and we're probably going to start filming it again in April (yes, it was that bad).

I also spoke to Patrick yesterday and he's planning on doing another Bankrupt Radio Session around then. You can listen to our earlier effort on the Downloads page.

I've also starting mixing the Stalkers Anonymous score, which Will recorded some material for in the Christmas holidays. We'll have tracks up for download as soon as they're available.

Meanwhile, I plan to finally make Living the Nightmare (in pre-production for 3 years!) in the Summer (its now or never really), while at the same time, provide assistance on Dave's new film "The Leech," starring Jack Shanks, which goes into production around the same time. Remember, you can still read the original version (which I've now completely re-written) of "Living the Nightmare" here.

Click here for reviews of House of Flying Daggers, Garden State, The Aviator, Closer, Team America, Assault on Precinct 13 & Sideways in the revamped Movie Reviews section.

While I'm at it, I must draw your attention to the brilliant "Raiding the 20th Century," a 60 minute mix which attempts to make a definite document on the history of cut up music. Its complete genius and features a cast of thousands.

Visit DJ Food.org to download the mix and check out the full tracklist.

And now its time for another World Exclusive. To celebrate the return of the site last week, I've put up a little surprise on the site for you to download. Due to legal reasons, I can't tell you exactly what it is (and again, it'll only be up for a week for bandwith reasons). All I'll say is that its very very cool, this is currently the only website on the internet with a link to it and its hidden somewhere on the Main Page. Its 54 MB in size, movie-related and you'll need Quicktime to watch it (once you've found it, I also suggest you save target as). I'll let you know exactly what you were watching next week.

(P.S. visit sincitythemovie.com - my new favourite site)
